Fade in to.... Orange is the New Black.

Orange is the New Black, the wait is ALMOST over. 

Ahhhh Netflix. The gift that keeps on giving with it's amazing catalogue of on demand television programs, films, documentaries, mockumentaries, films and Netflix originals - one of which, Orange is the New Black is a glowing testament to this. 
I. Love. It.






Based on the real life account of Piper Kermin's experiences in prison and her memoir, "Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Womens Prison", Netflix's Orange is the New Black is the story of Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), a comfortably off woman, in her thirties who is sentenced to fifteen months in prison after being convicted of a ten-year old crime of transporting money for her drug-dealing girlfriend - Alex Vause (Lauren Prepon). The show introduces us to an array of women  from all walks of life and their compelling backstories, as well as a gripping account of life in the federal upstate New York facility.

What is so enthralling about this show, is not just the originality of the story, but like many cult favourites , the endearment and popularity stems from the characters and the writing. OITNB deals with issues with such beautiful and thoughtful sensitivity, and has a refreshingly controversial yet real humanistic take on sexuality, gender, feminism, and race. As the viewer darts from the present day prison cell drama to trips back down memory lane with the women to the journeys that led them inside, we empathise, maybe crisitise but ultimately respect these exquisitely flawed characters.

I for one am excited to - ideally savor the episodes on a one-two per week basis, but will likely succumb to binge watching them all in a fortnight! Those of you you haven't tuned into Chapman and co yet, take some time to watch series one (you won't regret it!) and fellow fans, enjoy!
